It’s Not Just Our Water
This week, I witnessed something breathtaking—a deer, wild and graceful, leapt into the lake and began to swim across. At first it felt magical… but as it kept swimming, I felt the weight of it. This isn’t just our place. This isn’t just our water.
What was once beautiful now felt fragile. And as I stood there, heart open, I looked down… and saw garbage at my feet. Plastic. Trash. Left behind by people who say they love the beach…
We say we love nature.
We say we find peace in it.
But if we truly did, we’d do better by it.
This Earth doesn’t belong to us. We belong to it.
We don’t own this place. We share it.
With the deer.
With the birds.
With every child who wanders barefoot looking for stones, shells and other wonders only found along the shore…
So many treat these sacred spaces as backdrops. But this is home—to more than just us. We share this space. And sharing means respecting it—not just enjoying it when it’s pretty.
Let’s do better.
For the next deer.
For the next child who wanders barefoot along the beach.
For all of us.
